The story of the Pilot Cutter
Pilot cutters played an essential role in the vessel traffic control around 1900.
This type of vessel transported the pilots between the pilot station and the arriving and departing vessels. In those days Delfzijl was one of the pilot stations.
The presence of the pilot cutters did not only provide for safe vessel traffic but also had a positive influence on the local economy. Arriving vessels needed crew, provisions, maintenance and repairs.
For many locals of Delfzijl the pilot cutters were thus an important source of wealth and wellbeing. However there was a downside as even the pilot cutters did not escape the fury of the sea. A monument on the zeedijk is a silent witness.
The last pilot cutter retired in 1923. The pilot service remained but the era of the sailing had seemingly finished, until 1997 when plans for the Loodskotter Eems were revealed.
Stichting Loodskotter Eems
The historic Loodskotter Eems is an initiative of the Stichting Loodskotter Eems. In 1997 the plan grew to give the harbour of Delfzijl its own figurehead. It was decided to build a new pilot cutter as the figurehead for the harbour of Delfzijl.
With the Stichting Mens en Werk a work and education project was set up and about 20 unemployed people could start to build the Loodskotter Eems. Thanks to them, volunteers, contributors and sponsors the vessel came into service in 2004.
With the revenues from exploitation and contributions from contributors and sponsors the Stichting Loodskotter Eems can maintain the vessel.
Besides exploitation the vessel will also be utilized in various training, work and education projects.

Actueel
- Een zwerfreis is toegevoegd aan ons vaarprogramma. Er zijn nog mogelijkheden om met het schip naar een aantal maritieme evenementen te gaan. In ons vaarprogramma vindt u ze bij de reissuggesties.
- Met het Muzeeaquarium hebben we een avontuurlijk arrangement opgezet. U bezoekt het indrukwekkende collectie van het museum en maakt een zeiltocht met de Loodskotter. Kaartjes zijn te koop aan de kassa of te reserveren.
